The business closed in 1962 and was sold, but the office still stands. The buyer of the site had a fire which took out the entire plant. The office is now a lovely private home.

East Allentown, PA - View from the Romberger Cast Stone quarry, looking toward the office. It is suspected this photo was taken early in the company's years, about 1918-1920, as the new buildings that would spring up later have not yet been built. It is possible the older buildings in the middle distance were from a pre-existing brickyard that had earlier occupied the same site. Misty and in the far background, you can see other businesses active at the time. The only two men that can be identified with certainty are the two men wearing white shirts standing across from one another on the road about halfway back. To the left is my young grandpa, Gilbert A. Romberger, and to the right is Daniel H. Romberger, his father and the company founder.

While all the plant buildings were destroyed in a fire by the next owner of the grounds, the office still stands and is a lovely private home now. This photo was taken in the summer of 2007.

Daniel and one of his granddaughters in front of his new home. Note the background, where there's little in evidence but fields. Now it's been built up and homes surround Daniel's home. His was one of the few homes in Allentown's west end back then, though he was not completely alone; the home across the street had been built a few years earlier so he had at least one neighbor.

Daniel's old home, as seen in 2007, before some exterior work was done in 2009. The masons who did the work, Machamer, kindly spoke with me about their plans, and patiently answered my cast stone questions. Dan, coincidentally the name of the gent who did most of the talking, told me that the original cast stone, while of good quality, had been subjected to 85 years of weather (and possibly acid rain), and that a previous occupant had allowed ivy to overgrow and weaken the cast stone, leaving it vulnerable and crumbly. The terrace surrounded by balusters (which had a drain which had not been cleared) had also been allowed to hold water over the years, making it essentially a pool, damaging the cast stone further. Additionally, some wrong decisions by the builder about the kind of joint connections used between the cast stone block had caused the blocks to wear against each other improperly as the structure shifted slightly over time. What all this means is that the entire cast stone front -the arches, terrace and surrounding balustrade- were replaced. Though this home is not in my family anymore, I love it very much, and was pleased the work was done well and authentically.

This cast stone projection from the house is what was replaced. The original work is pictured here. The supports on the upper railing are called balusters, making up a balustrade. At each corner of the balustrade are piers, topped by pier caps. Below that are arches, with a keystone centered over each. The remainder of the projection is solid cast stone block.

There's probably a specialized word for this but I don't yet know it. Whatever it is, this was placed on the side of Daniel's home to indicate the date of completion, and is, of course, made from cast stone. The mold of the shape at the top that resembles a shell is still in our family.

It's unknown where or when this picture of Daniel Henry Romberger was taken. My personal guess is that this was taken on the grounds of the business, because the slope behind Daniel resembles the slope near the office, and he's standing on a well-worn path that resembles the still-existing road into the workyard. I love the combination of clothing that speaks of his profession - the good dark suit, vest and hat, paired with the dusty shoes. One gets the sense his position required him to look good, but that being in his business, one had to expect to get a bit dirty as well.

Daniel H. Romberger as a mature man. This was edited from a picture of him with family on the steps of the old home on Madison Street in Allentown, where they lived before the four Romberger Homes went up.

While there are buildings one can pass any day in Allentown made by Romberger Cast Stone, the public knows the company's work most intimately in the city's Malcolm Gross Memorial Rose Garden. In small gazebos like this one, newly married couples often chose to have their pictures taken, with the bridal party and family seated on the benches made by our family company.

The old Sprague Electric Works in Bloomfield, New Jersey, now better known as GE Bloomfield, is now being considered for conversion to condominiums. All the white building trim and window surrounds were done by Romberger Cast Stone. The original buildings of Sprague from the 1800's were removed to build this one in 1917-1918.

The headstones of Minnie and Daniel Romberger at Greenwood Cemetery in Allentown. Not seen but to Minnie's side is the stone for her mother. Since this picture was taken, Daniel's stone has recently taken a few hits, apparently from the commercial lawn mower used at the cemetery.
