Actress. Born in London, she attracted the playwright George Farquhar's attention by reciting some lines from a play in his hearing. She obtained work at the Drury Lane theatre, where she was acknowledged ten years later to be one of the best actresses on the stage at that time. Her forte was tragedy and polite comedy. Colley Cibber acknowledged his debt to her performance in The Careless Husband (1704). She had few detractors, one of whom was Pope. Her death at the age of 47 left the theatregoing public in dismay. A relative by marriage of the Churchill family, she was buried in Westminster Abbey below the memorial to William Congreve.
