Annetta (Ballard) Campbell was the daughter of William Franklin Ballard and his second wife, Mary "Polly" Wilks. Annetta was the only child of this marriage.

Never wed until late in life, Annetta became the second wife of Rev. Julius Campbell. They had no children, though Julius had a number of children by his first wife, Ida Belle (Gaddy) Campbell.

Annetta and Julius were not related, but Julius' mother, Henrietta (Lewis) Campbell and Annetta's father's first wife, Sarah Elizabeth (Lewis) Ballard, were sisters. (It's a southern thing.)

Annetta was three years older than her niece, Grace Allene (Ballard) Gulledge. They were childhood friends, and remained friends all their lives. Grace's daughter, Marie (Gulledge) Church Wiggins (my mother) became interested in family history, and Grace sent her to see Annetta and Julius.

Marie quickly discovered that she and Julius were also related through the Lewis line. She spent many happy hours visiting them, talking and making notes about the Ballard, Lewis, and related families. They allowed Marie to make a copy of the large, framed photograph of William Franklin and Sarah Elizabeth Ballard that is posted on their memorials, and they gave Marie the Family Bible that had belonged to Annetta's father - to share with Ballard and Lewis descendants. Marie transcribed the Bible record and it was published in the Union County, North Carolina Genealogical newsletter. That transcription and some of Marie's notes on the families have been posted online on the Rootsweb Boards.

Marie loved Annetta and Julius, and told me so much about her trips to see them, much of which I've forgotten. But I could tell what wonderful people they were through Mom's stories.

Many thanks to Henrietta (Lewis) Campbell's great grandson, Steve Campbell Hagwood - Anson Chesterfield - who made a special trip to look for Annetta's tombstone at Ruby Cemetery, and took such wonderful photographs to share. Posted here on Findagrave with Steve's kind permission.
