John's parents were Caleb and Sarah "Sallie" Davis Harn. He was born in Frederick (now Carroll) Co., Maryland. His mother died young, so John was raised at his Harn grandparents' farm by his grandparents John and Dorcas Davis Harn. He married Charlotte Hay on 2 Dec 1822 in Baltimore Co., MD. According to a family record they had 14 children, 5 dying in infancy.
