Harry Watts Gilliam, 79, of Rt. 1, died Monday, June 19, 2000 at Lynchburg General Hospital. He was the husband of Hilda Dinkins Gilliam. Born in Pamplin, March 28, 1921, a son of the late Willie Connie Gilliam and Eliza Frances Gills Gilliam. Mr. Gilliam retired from the City of Lynchburg as a Captain of the #6 Fire Station with 30 years of service. For over 35 years he was a Grand Life Master in bridge and was a member of the Lynchburg Bridge Club and College Hill Baptist Church. Mr. Gilliam was an avid bridge player and enjoyed gardening, quail hunting and all sports. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Gloria G. and Edward M. Gibson of Newport News; two brothers, Dabney Gilliam of Halifax and W. C. Gilliam of Lynchburg; a sister, Bess Ranson of Lynchburg; two grandchildren, Scott Edward Gibson of Newport News and Dana Lynch of Richmond and two great grandchildren, Ryan and Benjamin Lynch. A brother, Lee Edward Gilliam and three sisters, Wilsie Allen Bruce, Mary Elder and Coralee Babcock preceded him in death. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 21, 200 at Robinson Funeral Home by the Rev. Steve Tyree with burial following in Fort Hill Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. tonight at the funeral home and other times at the residence.
