A Hauptmann and Flugzeugführer [pilot] with Stab Erprobungsgruppe 210, he died during a mission to attack Croydon aerodrome, when his aircraft (Bf 110D-0; wn:3338; S9+AB) was shot down by a Hurricane of 111 Squadron RAF, piloted by John Marlow Thompson, and crashed at Catt's Hill near Rotherfield, Sussex. The Bordfunker [wireless operator] Ludwig Kretzer also died in the crash.

Holder of the Knight's Cross, the Iron Cross 1st and 2nd Class, the Destroyer Operational Clasp and the Spanish Cross.
