He was born 6/6/1768 in Botetourt Co., Virginia Colony to John Cooper and wife unknown. After his marriage to Catherine and birth of their children, they moved their family to Indiana when the US Government opened up for settlement. He temporarily left the family in Washington Co, IN, while he went ahead to Hendricks Co. to obtain a land patent. After preparing the homestead he returned for his family. He died 7/3/1835 in Franklin Twp., Hendricks Co. and was buried on the family homestead in Hendricks Co Indiana. When the National Road (U.S. 40) was being built his headstone was in the way, so the family removed the stone. His remains are under the road to this day.
Shortly after Edmund and Catherine settled in Hendricks County, Edmund's brother Thomas Jack Cooper also settled there. Thomas Jack and Nancy moved west, leaving Hendricks County, in 1839.
