Nancy was the fourth of nine children born to John Matthew and Rosanna (Aldridge) Kivett. She married Barnabas 'Barney' York in 1813 and they had ten children: Aquilla, Nathaniel, William, John, Tyson, Cornelius 'Cornelia', Rosanna, Jones, Smith G. and Andrew Jackson.
