He was the son of Robert and Mary Darlington, of 110 King Street, Knutsford. He was a Flight Sergeant in the Royal Flying Corps, Service No. 3295. He had obtained special leave from Salisbury Plain to meet up with his brother Private James Darlington R.A.M.C. in London. They had not seen each other for 2 years. While in London Fred was caught up in an air raid and was killed aged 20 yrs. His body was taken to Knutsford by train. At his funeral his coffin was placed on a wheel bier and was drawn by a squad of wounded soldiers from the local military hospital, preceded by a firing party from Chester.
