Family history (through a letter of William B., Stephen's son) says that four of his sons moved West in the 1870s. The first two were William and brother Stanley, who failed to return from a beeswax sales trip to Asheboro in their teens. Instead, they left for Iowa, where an aunt lived. Stanley stayed there in Stuart, Iowa, while William moved to Kansas where his cousin Leander T. Lowdermilk later moved in the 1880s. Albanah and Clarkson later joined them.
