Our Dad and Papa, hardworking, passionate, husband, father, grandfather, brother, son, mentor and friend. “Dude” was also an avid fisherman, hunter, outdoorsmen, and in his younger years, a Bexar County Gunslinger. He had a love for wade fishing in the salt water and deer hunting, always chasing a trophy trout and searching for “Bullwinkle.”

Darrell “Dudley” Bernhard, 63 of Boerne, Texas, passed away suddenly at his home on Saturday, April 4, 2015.

Born in Fredericksburg, Texas to Charles Darrell and Carlette Rose Bernhard on August 10, 1951, he was the eldest of seven boys.

He was a 1969 graduate of Churchill High School. Soon after, he enrolled in drafting school and then went to work for his family construction company.

He married the love of his life, Sue Ellen Schlather on September 18, 1971 in San Antonio, Texas.

Dudley and Sue made Boerne their home in 1982 for him to pursue work with his father building custom homes and raise their 3 girls. With a mind of a master craftsman many times quoted, he could re-write the books that most inspectors went by. As owner and operator of Slabco, Inc., he had a passion for his work but first and foremost, closest to his heart was his family. He enjoyed every day of his life.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Robert and Vera Moritz and Arthur and Gertrude Bernhard; his parents, Charles and Carlette Bernhard; and his brother, Bryan Anthony Bernhard.

Dudley is survived by his wife, Sue Ellen Bernhard; his daughters, Kimberley Welch and her husband Rod, Courtney Pfeiffer and Bill Dooley, Stephanie Dauphin and Louis Gawlik; grandchildren, Taylor Bakke and her husband Michael, Kirby Welch, Rhett Welch, Riley Welch, Allison Pfeiffer, Taylor Dooley and Ryder Dauphin; his brothers, Robert Bernhard and wife Cindy, Sid Bernhard and wife Karla, Brad Bernhard and wife Tammie, Myron Bernhard and wife DeAnn, Corey Bernhard and wife Loretta; and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.

Dudley was loved by so many, and will be deeply missed.

Visitation will be Wednesday, April 8, 2015, 10:30 AM-12:30 PM followed by a funeral service at 1 PM at Grimes Funeral Chapels officiated by Bert Allen Pfeister. Interment will be in the Greenwood Cemetery in Fredericksburg. Celebration of Life will follow at Kendall County Fairgrounds, Boerne, Texas at 4 PM.

Our family’s wish, in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Respite Care of San Antonio, PO Box 12633, San Antonio, Texas 78212; www.respitecaresa.org
