Hazel Amanda Tollefson was born in Kensington, Minnesota on March 21, 1903, the daughter of Emil and Ida (Peterson) Swenson Windahl. She was baptized and confirmed at First Lutheran Church at Kensington. She attended school in Kensington and on May 5, 1923, was united in marriage to Elmer Tollefson in Hoffman. The couple lived in Kensington and Morris before moving to Alexandria in 1941. Hazel had been a resident of the Knute Nelson Memorial Home in Alexandria for the past eighteen months. She was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Alexandria. Hazel enjoyed doing seamstress work, gardening, cooking, working around the home, and being with her family. All her life, she was active in women's groups in congregations where she was a member. One of her most gratifying and satisfying experiences was helping build the new First Lutheran Church in Alexandria in 1949.
She died June 22, 1988, at the Knute Nelson Memorial Home at the age of 85 years. Hazel is survived by husband Elmer Tollefson of Alexandria; daughter: Audrey (Mrs. Kenneth) Tessmer of Alexandria; grandchildren; Steven Tessmer of Mound; Julie Card of Wenatchee, WA; Amy Sunderland of Minneapolis; three great grandchildren; brother: Edwin Swenson of Willmar and sister Gertrude Nordquist of Alexandria. Hazel was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers and one sister.
Funeral services were June 25, 1988 at the First Lutheran Church, Alexandria, Minnesota, with Rev. Lloyd Nelson and Rev. Irv Tweet officiating. Interment was in Kinkead Cemetery, Alexandria, Minnesota.
Pallbearers were James Robertson, Harold Ahlbom, Ray Tollefson, Donald Bratlien, Richard Bratlien and Everett Tessmer. Honorary pallbearers were bennie Osterberg, Leonard Braaten, Lenore Osterberg, Phil Hanson, Reuben Olson, Tony Osterberg and Bill Heegaard. Arrangements with Anderson Funeral Home.
