The third USS Alligator was a schooner in the United States Navy. On 6 June 1996, the site of its wreck was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.
Alligator was laid down on 26 June 1820 by the Boston Navy Yard; launched on 2 November 1820; and commissioned in March 1821 — probably on the 26th — with Lieutenant Robert F. Stockton in command.

William Howard, Lieut. in the U.S.N. who was killed in the act of boarding a piratical vessel on the coast of Cuba near Matanza, on the 9th of November, 1822, ae. 32. His remains first buried at Matanzas, were removed to this city by the United State Government and interred under the directions of the Common Council of this City beneath this marble erected to his honor by the citizens of his native place 1833.
