When the war of the rebellion broke out he enlisted May, 1861, in Co. H. 2d Reg. Ia. Vol. Inf., and in the fall of 1863 was made Captain of Company D, Ninth Regiment, Iowa Volunteer Cavalry, in which he served until the close of the war. He was honorably discharged in May, 1865, having taken part in the terrible battles of Fort Donelson and Shiloh and the siege of Corinth.

Dr. McCutchan's early life was spent as a farmer. At the age of 22 years he entered college at Washington, Ia., where he was graduated in May, 1861. In 1865-66 he read medicine with Dr. Webster at Monmouth and received the degree of M. D. from the Medical college at Keokuk, Ia., in the spring of 1868. Since then he has practiced his profession at Norwood and Alexis. He has enjoyed a good practice, having stood for every movement for good in his profession all these years.

DR. JAMES F. McCUTCHAN was born in Adams county, Ohio, in 1833. His early life was spent on the farm. When twenty-two years of age he entered college at Washington, Iowa, and graduated from that institution in May, 1861. Immediately after completing his studies he enlisted in Co. H, 2d reg. Iowa Vol. Inf. During his connection with that regiment he became personally acquainted with Gen. James B. Weaver. In the fall of 1863 he was made captain of Co. D, 9th reg. Iowa Vol. Cav., and acted in that capacity until the close of the war. Previous to his promotion, however, he participated in several engagements with the 2d Iowa, among which was the battle of Fort Donelson, where that regiment won for itself a name that will go down into the pages of history. The doctor was discharged in May, and was married in August, 1865, to Miss M. J. S. Graham, a native of Washington county, Pennsylvania. In the fall of 1866 he became a student at Keokuk, Iowa, and received his diploma in the spring of 1868. In that year he located at Norwood, and since that time has participated in that vicinity. In conversing with the doctor the writer found him to be a gentlemen of more than ordinary intelligence, fluent in conversation, and progressive in all things.
