Named 'Titularpfarrer' by Cardinal Joachim Meisner, Archbishop of Cologne on February 20, 2002 and Chaplain of His Holiness by Pope John Paul II on the following May 28, he was appointed Honorary Prelate of His Holiness by Pope Benedict XVI in 2012.
Falling seriously ill back in 1991, having received a donor heart, Hünseler lived always quite aware in the face of death, which came quite unexpectedly on the eve of his 50th birthday in his room at the Casa del Clero in Via Traspontina near Castel Sant'Angelo. His body was discovered in bed on the morning of his birthday. Having resided for most of his life in Rome, first at the Hotel Villa Mater Dei of Viale delle Mura Aurelie 10, until prices rose drastically following complete refurbishment, Father Stephan once wrote that "Wuppertal is my birthplace, but she could keep me only in my first years of life!". Whenever he was asked whether the bad air and heat of Rome were bad for his heart, he replied that he felt fit as a fiddle and that his health was much better than it was in Germany.
A funeral mass, presided by Cardinal Francis Arinze, was held at the Santo Spirito in Sassia church on Monday, November 17 at 17.30 hrs. Successively, his body was transferred to his native Wuppertal, where another requiem mass, presided by Bishop Dominik Schwaderlapp at the Immaculate Conception church of Wuppertal Vohwinkel, Edith-Stein-Str., on Friday, October 24 at 15.00 hrs., followed by interment in the parish cemetery.
