Stage, film and TV actor. Born into the prominent Jewish family under the name of Pinhas Haimovich Veksklyar in the town of Talne, Uman county Cherkassy region in Ukraine. In "A short history of the city Talne" there is a version, that the town's name came from the German word "Tal" (translates as "Valley"), that Ashkenazi Jews brought to the place in mid XVII century. In Yiddish word "Valley" also sounds like "Tal".
Actor was best known for his role of the Grandfather Panas, in Ukrainian Did Panas. Pyotr Vesklyarov spent more than twenty years, from 1962 till 1986, reading an evening fairy tales, first on Ukrainian radio and then on television in the program "Good night kids", in Ukrainian "Na dobranich diti."
Pyotr Efimovich always appeared on TV wearing embroidered traditional Ukrainian shirt, which is why he constantly braved accusations of nationalism, but attempts to remove him from the air in the 1970s had failed. His tremendous popularity among the young audience had a downside. Grandfather Panas shut actor Pyotr Vesklyarov way into the film, because no matter in what roles he appeared on screen, audience refused to accept him other than as their beloved Grandfather Panas.
