Phillip Schmidt was born in Josefsberg, Galacia, Austria (now known as Korosntsya, Lviv Oblast, in NW Ukraine). He was the son of Johann and Katherine (Walter) Schmidt. In about 1869 he married Elizabeth Tempel, daughter of Balthaser and Elizabeth (Schlamp) Tempel, possibly in Bergdorf, Odessa. They moved to NeuKassel, Gluckstal, Odessa, Russia, (or possibly Rosenfeld) where their six children were probably born: Martin, Peter, Elizabeth (Keller), Susanna (Schindler), Christina (Kramer,) and Frank. Frank died in early childhood. Phillip was killed while on horseback, helping protect his family and village from raiders.
