Helen Baleme was born on March 10, 1927, in Visalia, Calif., the middle child of three daughters. Her parents, John and Mollie Combs, reared the girls in Woodlake, Calif., where John worked in the orange groves. The family moved to Merced when Helen was 17. There her dad worked at Cross Lumber Company. Helen accompanied her father to work in the early mornings and sat in the car outside until it was time for her to walk to her job at Four Star Market.

Helen enjoyed sewing clothing for herself, her girls and her grandchildren. She also crocheted afghans, baby booties and blankets as gifts for family and friends. She loved helping others.

She and Al had a houseboat on lake McClure for 24 years. They traveled all over the world and crossed the U.S. in motor homes several times, antiquing along the way. They went to every state in the union, including Alaska and Hawaii. They were very active in the Mobile Nobles (Shriners) and the Roaming Elks and enjoyed playing cards with the group. Helen loved entertaining in her home---she was famous for her parties. One of her favorite sayings was "Are we having fun yet?"
