Before joining the army on the 29th January, he was manager of Knutsford Co-operative Stores. For a time he also served in the society's branch at Broadheath. He was a Private in the South Wales Borderers, 3rd Battalion, Service No. 29583. He died from pneumonia in the Seaforth Military Hospital, near Liverpool, aged 28 yrs. He left a widow and two children. He was buried on the 24th February 1917.
