BECKER
Hortense Guernsey Becker died at age 87 on Monday, March 24, 1986, at the Chariton Manor. She was born June 7, 1898, in Corydon, Iowa, daughter of Cora Parr and Ira L. Guernsey.
Following her graduation in 1915 from Chariton High School, she attended Grinnell College before moving East for her Master's Degree. Prior to retiring in 1960, "Miss Guernsey" was history, Latin and Spanish teacher at Chariton High School. She is fondly remembered as an enthusiastic and caring instructor by generations of her former students.
After retirement she married Ralph Becker of Chariton, sharing life with him for fourteen years until his death.
In most recent years, Mrs. Becker was known for her constant, friendly activities. She was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Chariton, where she published the church newsletter. She also retained membership in many clubs and organizations including Chariton Book Club, Chariton Women's Club, P.E.O., Pandora, Republican Women and Retired Teachers Association.
Mrs. Becker was preceded in death by her husband, beloved brother, mother and "Papa."
Mourning her passing are her sister-in-law, Sylvia Bradford of Chariton, a niece, nephews, cousins, many friends and former students.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, March 27, at the Chariton Presbyterian Church. Fielding Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements. Interment was in the Chariton Cemetery.
