HOWARD P. CROCKETT , 78, of 907 S. Park Blvd., died Monday night at Freeport Memorial Hospital following a brief illness. (Alice Horner’s note: I called the secretary at Oakland Cemetery in Freeport, and she gave me his burial date as October 28, 1982. So his death date was Monday, October 25, 1982.) He was a retired Illinois Central railroad engineer and member of First Baptist Church and the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers. Born August 21, 1904 in Freeport, he was the son of D. Herbert and Hattie (Burt) Crockett. He married Margaret E. Wittenmeyer July 23, 1949 in Hillsdale, Wisconsin. She died January 11, 1981. Surviving are two brothers, Louis of Rochester, Minnesota and Newell P. of Fort Madison, Iowa. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by two brothers. Graveside service will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Oakland Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Burke-Tubbs Funeral Home. A memorial fund has been established.
