Col. Schroeder was born July 4. 1924, in Kiel, Germany. He received his M.D. degree from he University of Kiel, Medical School, in 1948 and entered the Army in 1957 after a four-year internship and surgical residency at Greenpoint Hospital, New York City. After several surgical-professional assignments Col. Schroeder previously commanded the 11th. Evac Hospital in Pusan, Korea, the Army Hospital in Ft. Polk, La., the Army Hospital in Bremerhaven, Germany, and Munson Army Hospital, Ft. Leavenworth. Col. Schroeder was a diplomat of the American Board of Surgery and also was awarded a master's degree in hospital administration by Baylor University'in 1958. He was preceded in death by his wife, Astrid, and is survived by daughters Christine and Patricia.
