Josephine Ward Henderson Merrill Vieux Gill was the daughter of Captain Joseph Henry Ward who served in the Civil War as a Captain in J. S. Henry's Frontier Batallion, Texas Rangers, organized to keep the Comanches under control.

Her mother, granddaughter of a Choctaw Indian princess, traveled at the age of six with her parents and many others of the tribe from Mississippi to Oklahoma (The Trail of Tears), arriving in southeastern Oklahoma ( Indian Territory ) in 1833.

Life in the uncivilized west was tough throughout Josephine's years, but she managed to raise seven cultured children, ensuring their educations and instilling several with a love for the arts.
