He married Catherine Hart on 22 August 1852 by Rev. John Burgess at his residents in Cardington, Morrow County, Ohio.

They had eight children: Mary Olive born 25 November 1853 died 10 May 1945(married a W. A. Mc Nichols); John Randolph born 11 May 1856 died 10 Dec 1930;(Flora J born 05 March 1858 died 12 October 1938(married Joseph A Lingle on 31 March 1877); Harvey Quincy born 01 Dec 1859 died 13 November 1929 married Clara Montgomery on 03 May 1892); Bertha Ann born 27 March 1862 died 19 Mar 1946(married Samuel Francis Higens on 08 March 1881); Sarah Lousia born 05 July 1867 died 11 August 1942 (married Edward L Webster on 07 October 1894); William Sherman (Died in Manila, Philippines Islands, killed in the battle of Guiguiuton); Minnie May.

William Burgess served in the Civil War from 1862 to 1865. Same family say his death was the result of injuries he received during the Civil War.
