Paul Lee Nash, 87, passed away at 4:13 pm on Monday, November 7, 2011 at VIP Manor with his family by his side.

He was born on August 5, 1924 in Picher, OK, the son of Osa Lee Nash and Reitha Evelyn (Garoutte) Nash.

He married Jane Elaine Furlow on September 26, 1942 in Elk City, KS. She survives.

Paul served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II and a member of the greatest generation serving in the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific from 1943 to 1946. He served on many ships, saw tremendous combat and sub service and was later classified a disabled veteran from his service After the war he worked at Olin briefly and then was a millwright machinist at Laclede Steel in Alton for 33 years, retiring in 1982. He was a mechanic all his life. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, a lifetime member of the Alton VFW Post 1308 and the Bethalto Senior Citizens. He traveled all over the United States, enjoying vacations with his family. He also enjoyed fishing, square dancing and most of all spending time with his family, especially when they all came home for the holidays. He was a gentle and kind man, a loving husband and wonderful father. He will dearly be missed by all who knew him.

In addition to his wife of 69 years, he is survived by children and their spouses, Jerry and Elizabeth Nash of Fosterburg IL, Maurice “Gene” and Christina Nash of Treasure Island, FL, Richard Paul and Judith Nash of Louisiana, MO, Jackie Nash of Moro, IL and Janet and Andy Asbury of Moro IL; fourteen grandchildren, Sherri Kaye Ashlock, Kelly Ann Manns, Gregory Nash, Jeffrey Nash, Nathaniel Nash, Christina Finke, Charlotte Todd, Michael Greear, James Grieve, Amanda Asbury, Ashton Nash, Tyler Nash, and Dustin Nash; fourteen great grandchildren; two sisters, Mary Smith of Purdy, MO and Rosemary O’Dowd of Springfield; a brother, Thomas Crowell of Aurora, MO and his nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Linda Kay Greear, a grandson, Ricky Dee Nash, five sisters, Marie Shoemaker, Eula Heatherly, Carol Filadelphia, Betty Meyers and Barbara Scott and a brother, Darrell Nash.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 pm on Thursday, November 10, 2011 at Elias, Kallal & Schaaf Funeral Home in Bethalto.

Funeral services will be at 11 am on Friday, November 11, 2011 at the funeral home with Pastor Willard Meyer officiating.

Burial will follow at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto.

Memorials may be made to Shriner’s Hospital for Children in St. Louis, MO.
