He was born on November 21, 1923 in Janesville, the son of Frank and Martha (Koepp) Samek. Karl married Bernice "Bee" Egre on August 11, 1951 in Cambridge. He has been a Janesville resident all of his life. He graduated from Janesville High School in 1941 and Milton College in 1953 with a BS in accounting and auditing. Karl was a Sergeant in the US Army during World War II serving in the European Theatre. On March 1, 1953, Karl started with the City of Janesville in the Engineering Dept. as a cost accountant; was appointed Administrative Assistant to the City Manager on May 1, 1957. He was appointed Acting City Manager on January 1, 1967 and on September 21, 1967, Karl was appointed City Manager of Janesville retiring on January 8, 1982. Karl was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church where he served as past Treasurer of the Congregation, and past Chairman of the Development Study Committee, and past Chairman of the Building Committee and past Council member. Mr. Samek was a member of the American Legion,
