Exa was born in Fisher County, Sweetwater, Texas. She was murdered by her husband Alfred Day Payne a local Amarillo, TX. attorney. He had placed an explosive device in the seat of their car, a Durant, and when she got a few blocks from home it blew up and killed her. Her 11 year old son Alfred Day Payne Jr. was with her at the time and although severely injured he survived. The explosion took place about 10:35 AM Friday on Line Avenue between S Louisiana and S Mississippi streets. She had two other children, LaDell age 14 and Bobbie Jean age 9. Exa is buried in the Memorial Lawn Section, Lot 340, Space 2.

Her husband was soon arrested, confessed and killed himself while in jail on August 30 1930 by an explosive device. Although he wished to be buried next to his wife this request was denied and he is buried in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Swisher County, Tulia. Texas.
