Her obituary (newspaper and date unknown) reported "'And God shall wipe all tears from their eyes and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow nor pain.' When death claims our loved ones, we are never really prepared, though we know it is a blessed relief from suffering we know that only through death can eternal life come. As we are gathered today to pay our last respects to one who has spent much of her life among us, we are reminded that Death is the turning of another page in the book of life. Death is the golden key that opens the palace of eternity. So it is comforting in this hour of bereavement and sorrow to know that earth is but a transient place. Just a place to tarry, and that beyond is eternity, where family ties are never broken. So midst our tears and sorrow at the separation from this mother, friend and neighbor and Christian woman Alta Hawk McCarty comes the assurance that her life of more than four score years has not been lived in vain. She was born to Calvin and Mary Ann Underwood Hawk on Oct. 8, 1869, the eldest of 2 children. A member of one of Orange County's pioneer families when every accomplishment was done the hard way, of which she often spoke. She affiliated with the United Brethren church at Sulphur Creek when a young woman and continued that faith throughout life. She was united in marriage to Thomas McCarty Dec. 15, 1887 and to this union 8 children were born. Della, Reed and Harold have preceded her in death, also her husband died in 1934. She leaves the following children who mourn her passing. Lloyd of Dale, Ind., Ivan of French Lick, Mrs. Doris Seybold of French Lick, Mrs. Ruth Jones of Paoli and Lee McCarty of Abydel, with whom she made her home. Besides the children named she leaves 17 grandchildren and 28 great grandchildren. She also reared Marie McCarty, a granddaughter, in her home and loved as her very own. She also leaves 4 step-grandchildren whom she loved. Her brother's children mourn the passing of their only aunt. They are Mabel, Anna Marie and Virgil Hawk of Kokomo, Ind. Although her sickness was of short duration, all was done that tender loving hands could do for her comfort, and the extension of life. On the morning of Mar. 30, 1955 the Lord called her to come a little higher leaving her family here to be with her loved ones who have gone on before at the age of 85 years, 5 months and 22 days. Let your grief be consoled in the sweet belief that her life will continue long in our memory."
