Richard Basil Atkins was born on October 13, 1856 in Stewart County, Tennessee, the son of George Thomas Atkins (ca 1828- ) and his wife Nancy Jane (Smith) Atkins (ca 1832- ). [The informant on Richard's Death Certificate incorrectly gave his mother's name as Mary rather than Nancy Jane.]

He was married to Mary Ellen (Low) Atkins (1862-1926), the daughter of J Low and Mary (Edwards) Low.

A farmer living at 2401 Dickerson Road, Nashville, he was 84 years old and a widower when he passed away at home on June 18, 1941. Burial was the next day in Spring Hill Cemetery, Madison.
