DR.EDWIN MARSHALL HEMNESS, 82, retired orthopedic surgeon, died Monday, June 12, 2006 at his home. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, June 14 at Nowell Funeral Home. Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 15 at St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Clarksdale, with burial in Rollag Luthern Church Cemetery in Hawley, MN. Dr. Edwin Marshall Hemness was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, member of the American Legion and 40 & 8, member of the American Medical Association and a member of Mississippi State Medical Association. He graduated from Wahpeton, ND High School, served as an enlisted man, pharmacist mate Second Class 1942-1946, served in the US Navy while attending the following schools, State School of Sciences in North Dakota, Marquette University in Milwaukee, WI, University of North Dakota, University of Louisville, KY, served internship at Bremerton, Washington at Puget Sound Naval Hospital, served residency at National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland for adult orthopedics, served residency at Dupont Children's Hospital in Wilmington, Delaware for children's orthopedics, served as Chief of Orthopedics in Pensacola, Florida from 1960-1965, served as Chief of Orthopedics in Millington, Tennessee from 1965-1967, was assigned to USS Sanctuary in Vietnam from 1967-1968, served as Chief of Orthopedics again in Millington until he retired in 1972, had a private practice in Clarksdale, Mississippi from 1972 until he retired in 1986. Dr. Hemness leaves a daughter, Jean Marie Hemness (Willie) House of Clarksdale; a son, Edwin Hemness Jr
(Niki) of Millington, TN; a sister, Mary Elizabeth (Marvin) Hanson of Hawley, MN; four grandchildren, Eddy Hemness of Millington, TN, Gloria Hemness Riggs of Sumter, SC, Amanda Marie Hemness of Clarksdale, and Kimberly Bardwell of Memphis, TN; and seven great-grandchildren. Nowell Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
