Mayor of Columbus Ohio. After serving in the War of 1812, he settled in the wooded area where the new town of Columbus, the site chosen to become the capitol city of Ohio, was to be established. Being a carpenter, he literally helped build the town which by the end of 1813 reached a population of three hundred. His brother, Michael, obtained the carpentry subcontract on the first Columbus State House which was built in 1816 presumably with the help of Alexander. It is certain that together they built several downtown buildings including a two-story brick building which contained the offices of governor, secretary of state, and the state library. He also served as chief of the volunteer fire department. Nominated by the Whig party, he was elected as Justice of the Peace of Montgomery Township in Franklin County in 1843. He was elected as mayor of Columbus in 1845. He stepped aside in 1846 and Augustus S. Decker, also a Whig, served as mayor for that term. He was reelected as mayor again for 1847 through 1849. When he left office, the population of Columbus was about 17,000.
