The Rev Robert T Bumgarner, 98, of Sidney, passed away at 11 pm, Thursday, June 1, 2017, at Ohio Living Dorothy Love.
He entered this world on Dec 6, 1918, in Richwood, the firstborn of four sons to the late John and Oma (Roush) Bumgarner. On Oct 14, 1940, he married M Ruth Lathey. They were married on the bank of the Ohio River by the bride's father, the Rev VJ Lathey. After 60 years of marriage, she preceded him in death, May 6, 2001.
Robert is survived by three children; daughter-in-law; 15 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one son, Robert L Bumgarner; one great-grandchild; and three brothers, Dallas L, Harold L, and Leland C Bumgarner.
In 1945, after five years of marriage and the addition of two children, he felt the call to the ministry and served the five-church Rock Castle Charge in Jackson County, West Virginia. During the winters, the muddy roads required the use of a horse, thus he became a circuit riding preacher. After having four children, and relocating to Findlay, he pastored two country churches while attending and graduating from Findlay College. He served as a minister most of his life, even serving part time for four years at the Lockington United Methodist Church, following his retirement.
In his later years, he enjoyed golfing and mostly spending time with his family. Robert was a member of the West Ohio United Methodist Conference. He was also a member of Stokes Lodge No 305 F&AM and OES, as well as the High Twelve Club in Sidney.
