A German air ace who was credited with 25 victories, made up of 8 balloons and 17 planes, and was awarded the Pour le Merite on 30 May, 1918. He began the war in the army, fighting on the Eastern and Western fronts, then did his pilot training in May 1916. After a spell in reconnaissance he switched to fighters and his initial success came in downing enemy balloons. His end came on 16 July 1918 when incendiary ammunition he was carrying in his plane caught fire, burning him and his plane. He landed his plane and was rushed to hospital but he died there from his wounds a month later.
