Mary Jane Surber, daughter of Jacob and Nancy Waggoner Surber, was born in VA. She married Daniel G. Walker in Botetourt Co., VA on Nov. 8, 1838. Shortly thereafter, they moved to MO and had eight children: John William born 1839 and is believed to have married Sarah Henriette Lister, George Washington, Sarah Malinda, Martha Ann, Asenath "Amanda" E. who married Philip Rowland Smith and died Jan. 1879, Charles Green, Mary Emaline who married Edward R. Montgomery and moved to Manhattan, KS, and Louisa Jane. Daniel died Aug. 2, 1855/1856. In the 1860 census Mary J. Walker is listed as head of household--widow--with seven children. On April 2, 1872, Mary J. married Elijah Elder, a widower.
