Joseph Surber, son of Jacob and Nancy Laura Ann Waggoner Surber, was born abt. 1820 in VA. On 8-20-1844, he married Louisa Rowland in Macon Co., MO. The 1850 census of Macon Co., MO shows three children: Mary E., Nancy J., and James W. Joseph served in the Civil War on the Union side with the 62nd Reg't E. M. M.; enrolled 8-15-1862 and ordered into active service on that day; died 9-7-1862.

After Joseph's death, Louisa married Daniel Moody on 9-7-1865 in Macon Co., MO and moved to Texas. Daniel and Louisa Moody are buried in Grayson Co., TX.

Joseph's daughter, Mary E., married Zachariah Tate (born about 1832 and died 1869 MO) in 1863 in Macon Co., MO and had two daughters, Idress? and Gertrude. After Zachariah's death, Mary married Isaac McWain on 7-25-1876 in Grayson Co., TX and is believed to have had four more children. She died in 1897 in Grayson Co., TX.

Daughter Nancy Jane Surber married Luther Demory and had nine children. They lived in TX and then in Indian Territory. Nancy and Luther are buried in Garvin Co., OK.

Joseph's son, James William Surber, was born 2-20-1850 MO and married Miranda Eliza Lyda. They had several children: William Earnest, Joseph Lunsford, Claude, Ella Maud (married Abraham Lincoln Thompson), Louise Frances (married John Boston), and Alice Berneice (sp?) (married John Lee). James later moved to WA and died in Everett, Snohomish Co., WA on Dec. 17, 1931.
