Born on February 24, 1930 at Burlington, WV, she was a daughter of the late Jess T. and Fannie (Hawse) Brafford Canan. Twice married, she was preceded in death by both husbands, Guy E. Smith on October 16, 1996 and Dixie Shoemaker on January 28, 1984; a son, Richard W. "Rick" Smith; a daughter-in-law, Lena Smith; a grandson, Lee Smith; a great grandson, Derek Turner; two brothers, Gerald and Austin Brafford and three sisters, Madeline Whetzel Dolly, Dorothy Ward and her twin, Berthaline Smith.
Mrs. Shoemaker was the former owner and operator of the VanMyra Inn and Restaurant in Burlington. She was a member of the Harness Run Church of the Brethren, Burlington and was an honorary member of the Burlington Volunteer Fire Department. She loved to travel and especially loved spending time with all of her family
