From the "Knoxville Register" 7 November 1832:
Departed this life on Sunday the 28th ultimo, at his own residence in the county of Monroe, Joseph Callaway, Esq. After a few short days sickness he fell victim to cholera, attended by very malignant symptoms, terminating an active and useful life life at about the age of 53. A native of North Carolina, he came early to East Tennessee, where few men of similar opportunities have succeeded in giving more evidence of strength of intellect and capacity for business; and with reference to the circumstances under which he commenced life, his career may be deemed fortunate it was not less the consequence of industry and talent steadily applied. At the tme of his death he was Surveyor General of the Hiwassee District, and a Magistrate of Monroe County. He had long been in public life; and it was his fortune, as that of most others, to have made some enemies as well as friends; his attention to business, his general intelligence and his conciliatory temper and manners were concealed by all, while, in private life, in the little circle of his friends and relations, to whom he was beat known, and by whom his worth could be best appreciated, he was esteemed, in all the relations of father, husband and neighbor as highly exemplary and amiable. By this circle as well as by the public at large, his loss will be long sensibly felt and sincerely deplored.- Allie Nelson
