Lewis was the sixth son of Colonel Ann Hawkes Hay and his wife Martha Smith Hay. He followed his older brother, Samuel to S.C. and became a low country planter. (Book of Hay, pg. 333).

He married Harriet Yonge Johnson, September 7, 1808. She died in Greenville, S.C. while escaping Sherman's invasion at the end of the War Between the States. (Book of Hay, pg. 333).
