Catherine "Kit" Barker Ragazzo

August 28, 1920 - June 2, 2000

Catherine was born in Wadley, Alabama, August 28, 1920 to Allen A. and Mollie Allen Barker. She graduated from Chambers County High School in 1938. Catherine entered nurses training and graduated with honors from Caraway Methodist Hospital where she worked until 1944. In late 1944, she joined the U.S. Navy Nursing Corp and worked at U. S. Naval Hospitals in Portsmouth, VA and New Orleans, LA until the end of World War II. In 1947 she married Philip J. Ragazzo and moved to New York. There she did post graduate nursing at Margaret Hogue Maternity Hospital, Jersey City and also graduated from Grace Downs Modeling School, NY, NY. She and Philip also lived in St. Louis and Cleveland, Ohio for his NFL Football Career before moving to Niles, Ohio in 1953. Their only child, John Anthony Ragazzo was born in 1950. Catherine or "Kit" as her Ohio family called her, worked at Trumbull Memorial Hospital from 1955 until her retirement in 1983. Kit was a member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, Niles American Legion and The Women in Military Service for American Memorial Federation. She also supported many positive causes throughout her life. She was preceded in death by her husband, Philip J. Ragazzo in 1994, and their son, Dr. John A. Ragazzo in 1996. After a fall in 1998 she moved to Scottsdale, AZ to live with her caregiver, Tom Steward, until she died. She is survived by two brothers, Melvin and Emerson Barker of Lanett, Alabama and their families. In Ohio she is survived by three sisters-in-law; Marie Fredericka of Niles, Ohio and Yolanda Meek and Connie Caputo of Girard, Ohio and their families. Arrangements through Joseph Rossi Funeral Home, Niles Ohio. Interment in the Veteran's Section, Niles City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to her favorite scholarships: Philip J. and Catherine B. Ragazzo Scholarship Fund, Case Western Reserve University, 10900 Euclid Ave, Cleveland, Ohio 44106; or John A. Ragazzo Emergency Medicine Scholarship Fund, Ohio University, P.O.
