LANETT — Mr. Melvin Barker, 80, of Lanett died Monday, May 15, 2006 at his residence.

A memorial service is scheduled Wednesday, May 17 at noon at McCarthy Funeral Home in West Point with the Rev. Alan Meacham officiating.

Mr. Barker is survived by two sons, Donald Melvin Barker of Bonifay, Fla., and Joseph Allen (Evelyn) Barker of Pine Mountain; and two grandchildren, Amanda Barker Dobson of Columbus and Kevin Gauntt Barker of Athens, Ga.

Born Jan. 9, 1926 in Chambers County, Mr. Barker was the son of the late Mollie Allen Barker and the late Anthon Barker. He was married to Dorothy Sargent Barker for most of his life. She died in 1992. He then married his high school sweetheart, Laura Fuller Barker, who died in 2005. Mr. Barker was in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II, where he served as a gunner in the B-29. He was a disabled veteran and a member of the American Legion. Mr. Barker graduated as the valedictorian from Chambers County High School in Milltown. He attended Auburn University and remained an avid fan of its football team. Mr. Barker was an active member of Sunset Heights Baptist Church, serving as Sunday school teacher and a deacon. He was the caregiver for his family, taking care of his parents, aunts, uncles, brother and his wives. Mr. Barker retired from George H. Lanier Memorial Hospital as chief of security.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, May 16 from 6 until 8 p.m. at McCarthy Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Chattahoochee Hospice, 6 Medical Park Drive, Valley, 36854.
