Gainesville - Darrell ("Tony") W. Anthony, 92, of Gainesville, FL died Friday, May 20, 2014, in Pleasanton, CA.
Tony was born July 5, 1921, on his family's farm in Buda, IL. He graduated Buda High School in 1939 and joined the Navy in 1942. He was assigned to the U.S. Marine Corps Air Wing at Mojave, CA, and was stationed at Guadalcanal, New Georgia, and Hawaii, before being discharged as a Second Class Petty Officer (Pharmacists Mate) in November 1945.
He married Dorothy Ostman of Kewanee, IL on July 11, 1944.
After the Navy, Tony obtained degrees in Entomology and Parasitology from the University of Florida in Gainesville and went on to become a respected research entomologist. In 1957, he took a position with the National Agricultural Research Center in Beltsville, MD. In 1968, he returned to Gainesville to work for the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Laboratory for Insects Affecting Man and Animals at the University of Florida. There, he led research projects on Insect Pathology until retiring in 1979. In his retirement, Tony was a volunteer docent at the Florida Natural History Museum's McGuire Center for Lepidoptera (Butterflies).
Tony enjoyed many hobbies in Gainesville with Dorothy, including bowling, golf, and square dancing, all of which provided them with exercise and friendships that lasted throughout their lives. Tony's greatest passion was for Barbershop music. In 1973, Tony joined the Gainesville chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society (the "Barbergators") and enjoyed nearly 40 years of arranging and singing the music he loved.
Tony was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church. He was predeceased by his parents, William H. and Edna (Wilcoxen) Anthony, his brother William Lowell Anthony, and his sister Miriam Heath. He is survived by Dorothy, his loving wife of nearly 70 years, his daughter, Sandra Sabbagh of Livermore, CA, three grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
