Mary was the daughter of Duane D. Locke and Emma Lou (Gray) Locke Uhlenbrock and the sister of Mabel, Betty, Edith, and Duane D. Locke, Jr. She was married to James Smith and had two daughters and a son, Evelyn, Ruth and James by her first marriage to James Smith. They were divorced and she married Alva C. Loyd (no children) and owned and operated a grocery store in New Point, Indiana. After his death in 1962 she eventually married Robert A. Ake and he died in 1975. She lived in a nursing home in Greensburg for many years and lived three days past one hundred years old. Over the years family members visited her regularly. She is buried between her second and third husband. Her grave marker is shared on Alva's stone. She once said that Al was the only man she ever truly loved although her first and third husbands treated her very well. She accepted Jesus as her Lord and Saviour and later regretted the mistakes she had made in her life. She loved writing songs and playing the piano and singing.
