Mr. Phipps passed away on March 25, 2011, in Tyler. He was born June 22, 1928, in Lubbock to the late Joel and Ima Phipps. Mr. Phipps attended Texas A&M prior to joining the Navy, where he was commissioned on the USS Princeton. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service as the director of finances after over 40 years of service. Mr. Phipps was a member of Lanes Chapel United Methodist Church, where he served as a greeter for many years and enjoyed the responsibility of mailing the newsletter to church members. He was a past member of the Tyler Optimist Club and was once named as Optimist Member of the Year. He loved to play golf and work with Meals on Wheels. He looked forward everyday to meeting with his coffee group. One of his greatest joys in life was spending time with his grandchildren, watching them in their endeavors and just being a kind and gentle loving husband and father.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Phipps was preceded in death by the love of his life, his wife, Chris Phipps in March 2010; infant son, Jack Phipps Jr.; and sister, Barbara Phipps Bell. He is survived by a loving family including two daughters, Linda Rose and husband Steve of Cypress and Jane Todd and husband David of Abilene. He is also survived by loving, cherished grandchildren, Trey Todd and wife Casey of Plano and Jackie Voller and husband Tyler of Lubbock; and special friends, Charlotte and Errol Ray of Tyler.
Pallbearers will be Bob McCreary, Joe Humphries, Errol Ray, Bill Whatley, Cliff Dunlop, James Pace, Bob Gentry and Dick Lane. The family would like to extend a special thanks to their Meadow Lake Retirement Community family.
Visitation is scheduled for Sunday, March 27, 2011, from 4 to 6 p.m. at Stewart Family Funeral Home, 7525 Old Jacksonville Highway, in Tyler.
