The funeral for James Leon Wingfield, 78, of Martinsville, who died Thursday, will be at 11 a.m. Monday in the South Chapel of Bassett Funeral Service with Pastor Chip Coleman officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery with military honors conducted by the Martinsville-Henry County Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends from 3 until 5 p.m. today at the funeral home and other times at the home of Faye and David Agee, 710 Grattan Road, Martinsville.
He was born March 17, 1930, to Ivan James Wingfield and Mattie F. Shaw Wingfield. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Leonard Marvin Wingfield, and two infant sisters.
He served in the Navy as a basic seaman during the Korean War. He was a member of Freedom Baptist Church and volunteered at the Community Storehouse for five years. He was the manager of Yellow Cab Stand and retired as a manager of Hardee’s.
Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Ruth Lawrence Wingfield of the home; three sons, Marvin Wingfield of Martinsville, Mike Wingfield of Patrick County and Mark Wingfield of Fieldale; three daughters, Kaye Harrell and Faye Agee, both of Martinsville, and Brenda Reed of Charlotte, N.C.; eight grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; a great grandson; and two sisters, Christine Smith of Ridgeway and Nancy Merriman of Bassett.
