First-born Son of Winfield & Lura (Gearheart) Cox - Young Valis died tragically from a fire after standing too close by the fireplace.

"It was early morning. Valis and his mother were outside for morning chores. He was getting cold. Grandma Cox told Him to 'go inside and warm up.' Once inside by the fire, He got too close and his clothes caught. After discovering what had happened, Grandma Lura Cox tried to save Him - She picked the baby up in Her arms and ran as fast as She could to get Him into the creek on Rock Fork to get the fire out."

She had scars on Her arms from Her being burned Herself. These scars would stay with Her until Her own death 67 yrs later. This particular account of what happened comes directly from Cousins Madge(Cox) Boggs, and Garnett (Cox) Moore, whose parents, (Melvin & Rosha Cox) were near there soon after it happened, as they too lived up the creek a little ways. Melvin Cox was Winfield Cox's brother. Other various accounts from family confirms. This was a terrible, devastating tragic loss for Our Grand-Pap & Grand-Mommy.
