Gladys M. DeWoody, 80, of 1322 Franklin Ave., died at 3:33 p.m. Tuesday, May 24, 1994, in the Oncology Unit of Northwest Medical Center at Franklin. Born Nov. 26, 1913, in Franklin, she was a daughter of Oscar E. and Estelle Ferry Mitchell.
She was a 1931 graduate of Rocky Grove High School, graduated from Welsh's Business School in Oil City, worked several years as a bookkeeper at Boyd N. Park in Franklin, then later she and her husband owned and operated the Original Dry Cleaners in Franklin until they sold the business in 1963. She was well known in the area as a pianist, organist and music teacher, taught many students to play the organ and piano, was an accomplished performer, playing for hundreds of weddings and other social occasions. For the past several years she played for funerals at Huff Chapel. In 1950, she became a representative of Miller's in Pittsburgh, selling Hammond organs. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Franklin, where she had served as organist for 23 years, was a member of the Diaconate and served as the church clerk, was a member of the Franklin Kiwanis Club, Business and Professional Women's Club, Franklin Civic League, Musicians Union and the Hammond Organ Society.
She first married April 12, 1935, to Charles B. Reynolds, who preceded her in death. She married June 18, 1983, to Paul A. DeWoody, who died June 10, 1992.
Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Newell E. (Carol) Confer of Franklin; three grandchildren, Mrs. Donald (Lori) McCool, Mrs. Jeffrey (Liu) Orc and Steven E. Confer, all of Franklin; and two great-grandchildren, Matthew and Kaitlyn McCool of Franklin; two stepdaughters, Mrs. Robert C. (Edith) McBryar of Saegertown and Mrs. William C. (Marilyn) Moffitt of Franklin; two stepsons, David P. DeWoody of Hopewell Junction, NY, and Robert E. DeWoody of Frankin; 17 step-grandchildren; 33 step-great-grandchildren; and a brother, Glenn E. Mitchell of Franklin.
Services will be held at the First Baptist Church with Rev. James G. Cameron, pastor of the church, officiating. Interment will be made in the Hickory Grove Cemetery in Victory Township.
