--She was the 9th of 12 children of Jarvis B. Harris and wife Mary Owens. The family moved from Georgia to Charlotte, NC in 1941. Benita graduated from Oakhurst High School, where she lettered in basketball and was team captain. She went on to earn a cosmetology certificate from Farah School of Beauty in Rock Hill, SC.
--Benita married William O. Reed on May 26, 1942. They were married 55 years. They retired to Charlotte in 1982 and she then went to work at Ledford's Clothing Store and later became Manager of the ladies department until the store closed.
--Benita and her husband had 2 daughters: Julie and Renee. 5 surviving grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, 3 great-great-grandchildren.
--member of Hickory Grove Baptist Church, where she taught the Love Sunday School class for many years.
--She died in the home of her granddaughter Sarah.
