"Martin Simon died here Friday morning July 29, 1898. Born on May 16, 1817, in Salzburg, Nassau, married 1841 with Katherine Schuerg, came to Texas July 1, 1852, and for six years farmed near New Braunfels. Then he moved into the hill country where he acquired lands on Tom Creek as efficient, industrious rancher. For 34 years he successfully managed stock raising and agricultural pursuits. Five years ago he prepared himself a home here in town to enjoy the evening of his life in leisure. The past year he developed palsy. He is survived by his wife, 7 children, 31 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren."
