Published in the Piscataquis (ME) Observer 28 Jun 1877 p2: "Rev. John S. C. Abbott died at his residence in Fairhaven, Conn., Sunday, 17th ult. [discrepancy], at the age of seventy-one years. He had been ill for some months. Born in Brunswick, Me., in 1805, he graduated from Bowdoin College when he was twenty years old, and, after completing his theological course at Andover Seminary, settled as a pastor at Worcester, and subsequently at Roxbury and Nantucket. He devoted himself to literature, and in 1833 published 'The Mother at Home,' which was followed by 'The Child at Home.' These were very popular, and were translated into fifteen or twenty of the languages of Europe, Asia and Africa. From 1844 he relinquished the pastorate, and engaged himself entirely in authorship. Among his most widely known works are a series of biographical histories, of Marie Antoinette, Josephine, etc.; a history of Napoleon Bonaparte in two volumes, remarkable for its eulogy of all his acts; a 'History of the French Revolution,' 'History of Austria,' 'History of the Civil War in America,' two vols., 'History of Napoleon III, Emperor of the French,' equally eulogistic with that of his predecessor, and many books for children, etc."
