Helen was born in Lipnica Murowana, Galicia to Anton Kuc and Rosalia Jaroszinski. She was the eldest of nine children, nearly all of whom died young.

Her living children included Anton, Szymon, Victoria, Rosalia, Michael and Martin. Victoria did not immigrate, but all the others did.
Helen and Andrew immigrated to America around 1886, along with five of their six living children. Andrew died in 1898 and Helen did not remarry.
